Expectations by
Charles Dickens, is a story about the growth and life of a common boy, named
Pip. He is born into the lower class, and aspires to become a gentleman. During
the beginning of the novel, Pip lives with his sister, Mrs. Joe, and his
brother in-law, Joe. Mr. Pumblechook, Joe’s uncle, soon arranges Pip to go and
play at a strange woman’s mansion. Pip is escorted to Satis house by Mr.
Pumblechook, and is let in through the gate by a beautiful young girl named
Estella. When Pip first meets Ms. Havisham, he is surprised by her shredded and
fraying bridal gown, with all the clocks stopped at 8:40. After visiting Satis
house for a couple months, Pip must endure Estella’s cruelness and Ms. Havisham’s
odd nature. Once Pip is an adult, he is offered the opportunity to visit London
to become a gentleman. In London, Pip discovers much about Ms. Havisham,
Estella, Magwitch, and Compeyson’s pasts. This novel contains many plot twists
and mysteries, and is a very compelling story.
