Personal Narrative

I personally, cannot relate too well to any of the characters in Great Expectations. I am not an orphan, I am not poor, I don’t have to become a blacksmith when I’m older, and I don’t have to go play at an odd woman’s house. I may not connect directly to any of the events or characters in Great Expectations, but I could connect to some of Pip’s feelings and desires. Pip thrives to become a well-educated boy, and to do well in school. This is a similarity between us, since I also want to do well in school. My education is very important to me, because I would like to get into a good college. Education is important to Pip because you must be educated if you want to become a gentleman.

Also, Pip and I have both really wanted to do or become something, then only to have our expectations crushed. Pip had wanted so badly to become a gentleman, to marry Estella. Once he finally does become one of the upper class, he finds out that Estella had married Bentley Drummle. With this bit of news, Pip’s dreams are crushed. After he realizes that Estella is taken, he goes back to Kent to marry Biddy. While he gets there, he finds that Biddy had already married Joe.

Another way that Pip and I are similar is that we both have very high hopes, and half of the time are let down if something doesn’t go the way we planned. Pip hopes to marry Estella, and feels disappointed when he finds that she is already married. Whenever I think I did well on a test, and end up doing not so well on it, I feel disappointed in myself for not doing better.
