Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 in Portsmouth, England. He was born into poverty, and his father was sent to jail. When he was twelve years old, he worked in a factory instead of going to school to raise money for his family. This experience scarred Dickens and inspired many of his novels. Two novels that were inspired by these events were David Copperfield and Great Expectations. Some of his other famous novels are A Christmas Carol, Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, Our Mutual Friend, and Oliver Twist. On June 8, 1870, Dickens suffered from a stroke and died the next day.
